Microsoft’s Windows 11 remote desktop feature is now officially out of preview and widely available for all users on Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets. The feature, which first launched in a limited preview in December 2024, is rolling out broadly as part of Meta’s Horizon OS v81 update.
The application allows users to stream their Windows 11 PC display directly into their headset, creating a private, multi-monitor virtual workspace. Users can choose to be fully immersed in their virtual desktop or use the headset’s passthrough camera to see their physical surroundings, including their keyboard and desk.
In addition to supporting multiple high-resolution virtual monitors, the full release adds a new ultrawide display mode, as first spotted by UploadVR. This new option transforms the virtual desktop into a single, massive, curved monitor that wraps around the user’s field of view, offering a productivity experience similar to that on Apple’s Vision Pro.
To use the feature, Quest owners must download the Mixed Reality Link app on their Windows 11 computer. Once installed, they can look at their physical keyboard while wearing the headset and select “pair” to connect.
The Horizon OS v81 update also introduces other multitasking and quality-of-life improvements. Users can now open up to 12 apps at once and have the ability to resize and rescale displays across all applications. Furthermore, a new “Full Passthrough” feature allows users to quickly check their real-world environment by double-tapping the side of the headset or pressing the action button on the Quest 3S.
