Pixel Camera app crashes on GrapheneOS without Play Services

GrapheneOS users report instant Pixel Camera crashes after the 10.x update, which now relies on Google Play Services for core resources.

The Pixel Camera app version 10.x crashes immediately on GrapheneOS devices after its release, as the update introduces a dependency on Google Play Services absent in prior versions. GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused operating system that excludes Google Play Services by default, experiences this issue because the app relies on resources provided through that framework.

GrapheneOS operates as a de-Googled variant of Android, designed to enhance user privacy by removing Google’s proprietary services and trackers from the core system. The Pixel Camera app, Google’s official camera application for Pixel devices, functioned without such dependencies in versions up to 9.9. With the arrival of version 10.x, the app now accesses elements like the Google Sans Flex font exclusively via the Google Play Services framework. Without Play Services installed, the app fails to load these resources, resulting in an instant crash upon launch. This change affects all GrapheneOS users who update the app through standard channels.

Users upgrading to Pixel Camera 10.x report the app becoming entirely unusable, with crashes occurring seconds after opening. Efforts to resolve this by downgrading to version 9.9 encounter multiple obstacles. Android’s version downgrade restrictions prevent installation of older builds over newer ones in many cases. Additionally, GrapheneOS automatically revokes app permissions during such attempts, further complicating the process. Older APKs, such as those from version 9.9, carry different digital signatures from the updated versions, which triggers security checks that block installation. To obtain these older files, users turn to alternative app stores like the Aurora Store, an open-source client for accessing apps from sources outside the Google Play Store. Even with Aurora Store, installing the legacy APKs proves challenging due to compatibility and verification hurdles inherent to the de-Googled environment.

One viable workaround involves reverting to the specific build Pixel Camera 9.9.106.773153235.19. This version operates independently of Google Play Services, restoring full camera functionality on GrapheneOS without additional modifications. However, users forgo access to enhancements introduced in 10.x, including improved image processing algorithms, bug fixes for stability, and support for newer hardware features on recent Pixel models. The process requires sourcing the exact APK and sideloading it manually, which demands technical familiarity with tools like ADB for secure installation.

A second workaround entails installing sandboxed Google Play Services on the device. GrapheneOS supports this through its compatibility layer, allowing Play Services to run in a confined manner without elevated privileges. Users can isolate it within a separate user profile or work profile, limiting its access to other apps and system components. This setup enables Pixel Camera 10.x to launch and utilize all its features, including the dependent fonts and APIs. The trade-off lies in introducing Google components, which partially undermines the Google-free principle central to GrapheneOS. Despite the sandboxing, some data may still interact with Google’s servers for crash reporting or updates.
