Following last month’s launch of the Xiaomi 17 series in China, company President Lu Weibing confirmed the rear screen featured on the Pro models will be included in future devices, citing significant investment and strong sales performance.
The Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models incorporate a 2.1-inch LTPO AMOLED screen embedded into the rear camera island, a feature developed with an R&D investment of CNY 1 billion. The company reported this feature contributed to setting a new sales record within the first five minutes of availability. Subsequently, the devices reached 1 million shipments in a record time for the company. The investment signals a long-term commitment to the secondary display technology.
Analysis of sales data shows a notable increase in market performance. Overall sales for the entire Xiaomi 17 series grew by 20% when compared to the previous generation of handsets. The impact was more pronounced for the premium models, with sales of the Pro series tripling in comparison to the sales figures for the earlier 15 Pro model. This data indicates a positive reception for the new design and its specific features.
Lu Weibing has affirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will also integrate a rear screen. To support this, the company is increasing its R&D investment to develop supplementary software functionalities for the display. The first new function, a real-time translation feature, is scheduled to arrive via a software update at the end of the current month. Xiaomi has also stated its goal is to introduce a new feature for the rear screen on a monthly basis.
