Reddit announced it is expanding its AI-powered search experience to five new languages, making the feature accessible in countries like Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, and Mexico. The update allows users to interact with a question-and-answer style search powered by a Google AI model.
The expansion adds support for French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Users who have set one of these languages as their system default can now engage with the AI chat function. This rollout specifically extends availability to Italy and the previously mentioned countries, broadening the feature’s international reach beyond its original English-language version.
Reddit first introduced its AI-powered search last year as part of a feature named Reddit Answers. This conversational search tool currently operates alongside the platform’s traditional search function, providing an alternative way for users to find information within the site’s vast number of communities.
During a quarterly earnings call in August, CEO Steve Huffman reported that standard Reddit search attracts more than 70 million weekly users, while the newer Reddit Answers feature is used by over 6 million people. On the same call, Huffman also discussed the company’s plans to unify these two search experiences into a single, cohesive interface.
The growth of Q&A-style search interfaces has accelerated since ChatGPT incorporated web search functionalities. This trend has prompted established search engines, including Google and Brave, to launch their own similar features. Concurrently, startups like Perplexity have also gained significant user traction with dedicated chat-based search products.
