Apple has added backend support for General Motors vehicles to its Wallet car key feature, a development following an announcement at its Worldwide Developers Conference that 13 automakers had committed to adopting the technology.
According to a report from MacRumors, which discovered the update in Apple’s code, the integration is a preparatory step. The publication noted, “Car key support for select General Motors vehicles could be added to the Apple Wallet app in the near future… Apple has added settings for GM vehicles to an internal list of vehicles that offer car key integration.” For General Motors, this support is expected to encompass its Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands, although specific models that will be compatible have not been identified.
This discovery follows earlier findings by researcher Aaron Perris, who reported on the social media platform X that Apple had also added backend code for vehicles from Rivian, Smart, and Voyah. The addition of these automaker settings within Apple’s systems suggests that the rollout of the car key feature for these brands could be forthcoming. However, the backend work by Apple alone is not sufficient to activate the function, as automakers must complete their own implementation on the vehicle side.
The 13 automakers that recently committed to integrating the feature include the newly added General Motors brands, as well as Rivian, Smart, and Voyah. The complete list of new brands also features Acura, Chery, Hongqi, Lucid, Porsche, Tata, and WEY.
