Apple has released a new setting within iOS 26 designed to prevent audio from automatically switching from wireless headphones to a vehicle’s speakers. The feature, reported by MacRumors, addresses user reports of audio unexpectedly rerouting from devices like AirPods when a connection to CarPlay is initiated.
The specific option is titled “Keep Audio with Headphones” and is located within the iPhone’s Settings app by navigating to the General section and then to AirPlay & Continuity. Activating this toggle ensures that audio playback continues through connected wireless headphones after the iPhone connects to external devices, including Bluetooth speakers or CarPlay-compatible stereos. This solution is designed to work with any wireless headphones paired to the iPhone, not exclusively AirPods.
Enabling the setting does not permanently restrict audio output to the headphones. Users retain the ability to manually redirect audio to the vehicle’s stereo system at any time. This can be accomplished through the iOS Control Center or directly within the CarPlay interface. While the audio remains routed to the headphones, all other CarPlay features continue to be fully accessible and operational for the user.
