OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced at the company’s Dev Day event that the ChatGPT service has reached 800 million weekly active users. The announcement highlighted the platform’s expanding adoption by consumers, developers, enterprises, and governments.
This user milestone represents continued growth for the AI service. In August, OpenAI reported it was approaching 700 million weekly active users, an increase from the 500 million weekly active users recorded at the end of March. During his keynote presentation, Altman also provided metrics on the developer ecosystem. “Today, 4 million developers have built with OpenAI,” he stated. “More than 800 people use ChatGPT every week, and we process over 6 billion tokens per minute on the API. Thanks to all of you, AI has gone from something people build play with to something people build with every day.”
The Dev Day event served as the platform for unveiling new tools designed for building applications within ChatGPT and for constructing more intricate agentic systems. Altman explained the potential of these new capabilities. “This will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with,” he said. The new tools are intended to facilitate more advanced and responsive chat-based applications.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT experienced rapid user acquisition, establishing it as a prominent consumer AI product and one of the fastest-growing online services. The platform recently expanded its offerings with OpenAI Pulse, a proactive service that delivers customized morning briefs to users who opt in. The service has also faced scrutiny over concerns about sycophancy and AI-induced delusions, exemplified by the case of Allan Brooks, who was reportedly misled by the tool into believing he had made a novel mathematical discovery.
While legally designated as a non-profit, OpenAI became the world’s most valuable privately held company following a recent private stock sale. The sale of $6.6 billion in shares valued the company at $500 billion. OpenAI has also maintained a high pace of product releases. Last week, it launched a new version of its video-generation tool, Sora, which was released alongside an accompanying social media network. In the same week, the company announced a partnership with Stripe to introduce a platform for agentic commerce.
