Apple has expanded its digital ID feature within Apple Wallet to include North Dakota. This development continues the company’s gradual rollout of the technology across U.S. states and territories, enabling its use at designated security and commercial locations.
The digital ID is accepted for identity verification at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints within specific airports and at a number of select businesses and venues. The practical application of the feature varies, as it is not universally accepted as a replacement for a physical ID card. Consequently, the digital ID functions more as a situational convenience than a full substitute. This is underscored by guidance from states like Montana, which joined the program last month, where officials still advise residents also to carry their physical ID.
North Dakota becomes the latest jurisdiction to adopt the technology. The complete roster of U.S. states and territories that currently support digital IDs in Apple Wallet now includes:
- Arizona
- California
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Hawaii
- Iowa
- Maryland
- Montana
- New Mexico
- North Dakota
- Ohio
- Puerto Rico
