T-Mobile announced that its chief operating officer, Srinivasan Gopalan, will become the company’s new chief executive officer, effective November 1.

He will take over from Mike Sievert, who has served as CEO since April 2020. Following the announcement, shares of T-Mobile fell nearly 1% in premarket trading.

Mike Sievert’s new role

Mike Sievert will transition to the newly created position of vice chairman. In this role, he will advise the company on long-term strategy, innovation, and talent development, ensuring a smooth leadership transition and continued strategic oversight.

Who is Srini Gopalan?

Srinivasan Gopalan is a seasoned executive with extensive experience in the telecommunications and finance industries. He took on the role of T-Mobile’s chief operating officer in March of this year after serving on the company’s board for nearly four years.

His previous leadership positions include:

  • Chief executive of Deutsche Telekom’s Germany business, where he is credited with doubling the company’s growth rate and expanding its fiber network.
  • Senior leadership roles at Bharti Airtel, Capital One, and Vodafone.

The leadership change comes at a time of strong performance for T-Mobile. In July, the company raised its annual forecast for postpaid net customer additions after adding more wireless subscribers than expected in the second quarter.

Srini Gopalan will take the helm of a company with significant market momentum.
