Apple is scheduled to reveal its complete iPhone 17 series on September 9, with anticipation building around the advancements in camera technology. A recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman provides a preview of the upgrades expected for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, focusing primarily on improvements to the camera systems.

Gurman’s report outlines five key areas of camera enhancement anticipated for the Pro models. These include significant advancements in video recording capabilities, suggesting broader improvements beyond simple resolution bumps. The telephoto lens is slated for a substantial upgrade, increasing from 12MP to 48MP, potentially improving zoom clarity and image detail at a distance. A variable-aperture system, which allows the camera to adjust the amount of light entering the lens, is also expected, promising enhanced control over depth of field and low-light performance.

The ability to record video simultaneously using multiple cameras represents another significant feature. This multi-cam simultaneous video recording, as described in the Bloomberg report, could allow for more dynamic and comprehensive video capture experiences. Finally, the front-facing or selfie camera is expected to receive its most substantial upgrade to date, though specific details remain undisclosed. Gurman’s report emphasizes “major enhancements” to video recording, specifying only simultaneous front-and-back camera recording as a concrete example.

The introduction of a variable aperture system is particularly noteworthy. Initial reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested this feature might debut with the iPhone 18. Its reported inclusion in the iPhone 17 Pro marks a potentially significant acceleration in Apple’s camera technology roadmap. The specifics of the variable aperture system will likely be revealed during Apple’s upcoming event, but it is anticipated to be a major selling point for the new Pro models.
