Play Solana will begin shipping its first handheld gaming console, the Play Solana Gen 1 (PSG1), on October 6. This marks an expansion of the Solana ecosystem into dedicated hardware for Web3 gaming.

The PSG1 is equipped with specifications designed for gaming applications. These include an octa-core ARM processor and 8 gigabytes of RAM. Connectivity is facilitated through WiFi and Bluetooth. The device also features a touch-enabled LCD display.

Enhanced security and functionality are provided by a built-in hardware wallet and fingerprint authentication system. These features are intended to enable users to securely manage and store crypto assets while engaging with games on the platform.

Play Solana initiated a limited non-fungible token (NFT) collection to provide exclusive benefits. This collection, limited to 2,000 holders, grants early access to the PSG1 and other unspecified ecosystem perks.

This launch follows Solana’s earlier entry into consumer hardware with the Saga smartphone. In 2022, Solana Mobile, a subsidiary of Solana Labs, introduced the Saga, an Android-based smartphone with blockchain integration. The Saga provided access to Web3 tools, including a Seed Vault, the Solana Mobile Stack, and a decentralized application (DApp) store for the Solana ecosystem.

The Saga’s initial reception was varied, but it achieved a successful launch in 2023. Demand for the Saga surged due to a free airdrop of the BONK memecoin, causing its resale price on platforms like eBay to reach as high as $5,000. The original price of the Saga on the Solana Mobile website was $599.

In 2024, Solana Mobile announced a second-generation mobile phone, positioning it beyond a “memecoin phone.” By 2025, pre-orders for this second-generation phone reached 150,000 units, resulting in estimated revenue of $67.5 million. Solana Mobile commenced shipping of this phone, named the Seeker, in over 50 countries on August 5.

Other blockchain networks are also entering the handheld gaming device market. In 2024, Mysten Labs, the creator of the Sui blockchain, announced the SuiPlay0X1. This handheld gaming device, integrated with the Sui network, is slated for delivery in the first half of 2025.
