LG pushes Apple to adopt Tandem OLED in future iPhones

Tandem OLED uses dual RGB layers for brighter screens, longer lifespan, and better power efficiency compared to traditional single-layer OLED panels.

LG Display is actively seeking to expand the application of its Tandem OLED display technology to future iPhone models, following its successful integration into Apple’s latest iPad Pro devices. The Korean display manufacturer is reportedly engaged in efforts to persuade Apple to adopt this technology for its smartphones, with potential integration rumored for the 2028 iPhone lineup.

The key advantage of Tandem OLED displays lies in their enhanced brightness and extended lifespan. This is achieved through a unique design that involves stacking two layers of red, green, and blue light-emitting materials, unlike conventional OLED panels that utilize a single layer. This dual-layer configuration enables the pixels to function at reduced brightness levels while maintaining the same luminance output. Consequently, the displays exhibit improved power efficiency and a prolonged operational lifespan.

LG Display has made substantial investments in Tandem OLED technology, positioning itself as a leading innovator in display solutions. The company views this technology as a next-generation advancement in OLED displays, with the potential to significantly enhance the performance and durability of iPhone screens. The proposed benefits include a brighter display and increased resistance to degradation over time, addressing common concerns associated with traditional OLED technology.

Despite the potential advantages, Apple has historically adopted a cautious approach to incorporating new display technologies into its products. The company subjects new technologies to rigorous testing and validation processes before implementing them on a large scale. While reports suggest that Apple is exploring the feasibility of using Tandem OLED displays in its 2028 iPhone models, the final decision remains uncertain. Apple’s decision-making process typically prioritizes factors such as battery life, cost considerations, and the overall user experience. It remains to be seen whether LG Display’s efforts to convince Apple will result in the integration of Tandem OLED technology into future iPhone devices.
