Spotify has launched a new in-app messaging feature that allows users to have one-on-one chats. The function is designed to create a persistent history of shared music and podcasts within the app.

To initiate a conversation, a user must have a prior content-sharing connection with the other person, such as being part of a collaborative playlist, a Jam, a Blend, or a Family or Duo plan. The recipient must approve a request before the chat can begin. Users can also send an invite link to contacts or initiate a chat by approving a request after receiving a Spotify link on an external platform. The feature, which includes emoji reactions, is accessible by tapping the user’s profile picture.

Messages are encrypted at rest and in transit but are not end-to-end encrypted. Spotify stated it will proactively monitor messages for rule violations, and users have the ability to report messages for investigation. For users who do not wish to use the feature, it can be disabled in the Settings > Privacy and social menu.

The messaging feature is rolling out on mobile to both premium and free users over the age of 16. The initial launch is in select markets in Latin and South America, with plans to expand to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand in the coming weeks.
