Apple has released its fifth beta firmware update for AirPods, offering testers a preview of forthcoming features expected in iOS 26. The update, designated build 8A5343a, is currently available for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 models.

This release represents the second firmware update since Apple initiated its public beta program for AirPods earlier this summer. The beta program streamlines the installation process for users wishing to test pre-release firmware versions. The previous version, 8A5324b, was released in July.

The new software introduces several iOS 26 features for evaluation. Key features include automatic audio pausing when the user falls asleep, aiming to conserve battery life and prevent disruptions. Another notable feature is studio-quality audio recording, potentially enhancing the audio fidelity of recordings made using AirPods. The beta also explores the functionality of using AirPods as a remote camera shutter, offering users a hands-free photography option. Further enhancements include smoother automatic switching when integrated with CarPlay, which seeks to provide a more seamless user experience. Finally, the update aims to improve voice quality during phone calls, potentially reducing background noise and increasing clarity.

Currently, these changes are exclusively available for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Users interested in participating in the beta program can enroll through Apple’s AirPods developer or public beta program. Both programs are free and offer a simplified update process compared to previous beta versions.
