Trump administration discusses Intel stake for US manufacturing

Intel had previously announced plans in 2022 to construct a semiconductor facility in Ohio under the leadership of then-CEO Pat Gelsinger.

The Trump administration is reportedly in discussions regarding a potential acquisition of a stake in Intel, aiming to expand the chipmaker’s domestic manufacturing capabilities within the United States.

While specific details regarding the size or valuation of the prospective government share in Intel have not been disclosed, reports indicate the primary objective of these talks is to enhance Intel’s manufacturing presence domestically. Bloomberg initially reported on these developments, though one source cautioned the publication that the situation remains fluid.

Intel had previously announced plans in 2022 to construct a semiconductor facility in Ohio under the leadership of then-CEO Pat Gelsinger. This project has since encountered delays. During its most recent quarterly earnings report, Intel executives stated the company would “slow the pace” of construction on the Ohio facility. The company also confirmed the cancelation of other international building projects and announced workforce reductions.

This potential move toward government ownership of Intel follows a recent shift in the administration’s stance toward the company. President Donald Trump had previously called for the resignation of CEO Lip-Bu Tan due to perceived connections to China. However, after meeting with CEO Lip-Bu Tan, President Trump appeared to adopt a more favorable view of the company leader.

An Intel representative provided a statement to Bloomberg, affirming the company’s “deep commitment to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen US technology and manufacturing leadership.” The representative added, “We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump administration to advance these shared priorities, but we are not going to comment on rumors or speculation.”
