WestJet announced a cyberattack earlier this year resulted in the theft of personal information from some passengers. The incident, identified on June 13, involved criminals temporarily accessing portions of the airline’s systems.

The compromised data varies by individual, potentially encompassing names, dates of birth, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and gender. Additionally, recent travel booking history, including booking numbers, may have been stolen. The breach also extended to information regarding travel documents such as passports or other government-issued identification documents used by passengers flying with WestJet.

The airline confirmed that credit and debit card numbers, along with user passwords, remained uncompromised. WestJet has advised that the stolen information could be utilized for identity theft or fraud. Consequently, the airline is providing affected customers with complimentary identity theft and monitoring services for a period of 24 months. Canada’s privacy commissioner’s office has initiated an investigation into the matter.
