iOS 26 brings iPhone style call banners to CarPlay

The update prevents incoming calls from taking over the full screen fixing a long standing CarPlay frustration.

CarPlay is set to receive a notable update in iOS 26 this fall, introducing a refined approach to managing incoming phone calls within the vehicle’s infotainment system. This enhancement addresses a long-standing user experience issue by implementing a new compact view for call notifications.

Previously, in iOS 18 and earlier versions, an incoming phone call would fully occupy the CarPlay display. This complete screen takeover interrupted ongoing navigation, potentially causing disruption during critical driving moments requiring visual access to mapping information. Users were unable to view directions or other essential display content until they either accepted or declined the call.

Apple finally lets users disable CarPlay screenshots in iOS 26

The iOS 26 update for CarPlay introduces a compact view for incoming calls, allowing users to identify the caller and decide on a course of action without fully obscuring the navigation interface. This design change enables drivers to maintain visibility of their route, even when a call is received. The new compact call notification appears at the bottom of the CarPlay screen, minimizing the area it covers.

The design paradigm for this new CarPlay feature mirrors the compact call banner introduced on iPhones with iOS 14. Prior to that iOS release, incoming calls on an unlocked iPhone would similarly seize the entire display. iOS 14 transitioned this to a less intrusive banner at the top of the iPhone screen. This consistency in design philosophy extends to the CarPlay update in iOS 26, presenting a familiar and less disruptive notification method for users.
