Why the future of Google Maps is less social than you think

Following the removal, all associated data, including users' lists of followers and the accounts they follow, will be permanently deleted

Google has announced it will be removing the ability for users to follow one another within Google Maps. The social feature, which allowed users to subscribe to the profiles and contributions of others, will be phased out and fully removed by September 2025.

In a community support post, the company confirmed that after the feature is discontinued, all associated data—including users’ lists of followers and the accounts they follow—will be permanently deleted. The change will happen automatically and will require no action from users.

Google clarified that the removal will not impact a user’s profile visibility or their contributions as part of the Local Guides program. For those seeking community interaction, Google is directing users to its dedicated Local Guides Connect platform. The ability to create and share lists of places will also remain unaffected.
