Apple Photos knows what you did last summer

Apple unveiled several new functionalities for the Photos application in iOS 26 at WWDC25, including the reintroduction of a tab bar layout and the ability to generate spatial scenes from existing photographs. These updates build upon previous design iterations and expand the app’s utility.

A significant underlying feature introduced in iOS 26’s Photos app is its enhanced event recognition capability. The application can now identify and group photos taken at specific events, such as concerts or major sporting competitions. This allows for a more organized presentation of user media.

Upon recognizing an event, the Photos app provides contextual insights. For concert photos, the application will display the set list, the performing artists, the venue name, related musical playlists, and information about upcoming concerts by those artists. For sporting events, the app presents the scoreboard, the venue, and details concerning future events.

Photos associated with recognized events will feature a specialized “ticket button” in place of the standard information button. Tapping this ticket button activates a new events panel, providing users with a consolidated view of event-specific data. Furthermore, “Memories” within the Collections tab will be automatically titled to reflect the specific concert or sports game attended, enhancing the organization and recall of past experiences.
