TikTok is implementing new features for songwriters within its application, designed to enable them to promote their musical works. These functionalities, currently in beta testing, incorporate a “Songwriter” designation and a dedicated profile tab to showcase their compositions, aiming to enhance their visibility to prospective collaborators.

The company confirmed that a restricted number of publishing partners and individual songwriters currently have access to the new labeling system and the music highlight section. Songwriters and publishers interested in participating in this program are required to join a waitlist at this time.

TikTok conducted extensive research, surveying over 870 songwriters and conducting numerous interviews, to ascertain their specific requirements regarding social media for profile development and the identification of monetization avenues. The company also referenced an independent survey indicating that over 50% of songwriters who utilize social media for profile elevation specifically use TikTok for this purpose. These survey outcomes, according to the ByteDance-owned platform, directly influenced the decision to develop these new features.

TikTok’s Global Head of Music Publishing Licensing and Partnership stated, “We are passionately committed to supporting songwriters at TikTok, which is why we built these tools to celebrate and elevate songwriters and their work on our platform.” The representative added, “TikTok is unique in its ability to offer songwriters a way to highlight their musical works alongside their own content, helping them to tell stories about their music, their craft, and their lives, and to raise their profile and build their audience on TikTok, as hundreds of thousands of artist creators already do.”

In related industry developments, Spotify has provided features for songwriters to highlight their work for several years. Last year, Tidal introduced a tool enabling songwriters to track royalties and manage works for which they hold songwriting credits, moving beyond mere highlighting.

Despite TikTok’s decision to discontinue its music streaming service, TikTok Music, last year, the platform retains its significance for users seeking new music discoveries and for artists promoting their tracks. Earlier this year, TikTok released a “TikTok for Artists” tool, providing artists with capabilities to monitor the performance of their campaigns and tracks.
