Perplexity recently upgraded its AI chatbot, Ask Perplexity, on the X platform, enabling it to generate videos from user prompts. This functionality is accessible to all X users who tag the chatbot in their posts or first-level comments.

Ask Perplexity now possesses video generation capability, distinguishing it as the sole chatbot on the X platform offering this feature. This includes a distinction from Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI team, which lacks similar functionality. The official Ask Perplexity account on X confirmed this new feature in a post:

Video generation is now available on Ask Perplexity! 🎥

The chatbot can produce eight-second-long videos using either a text-only prompt or a combination of an image input and a text prompt. The generated videos are capable of incorporating native audio, and the system allows for the inclusion of dialogue for multiple speakers. Perplexity has not disclosed the specific large language model (LLM) powering this video generation. However, based on the described capabilities, it is speculated that the underlying technology might be Google’s Veo 3 model, though this remains unconfirmed.

For example, one user asked: “Make me a video of Perplexity AI generating videos.” Here is the result:

To prevent the creation of synthetic videos depicting individuals with a strong resemblance to real-world celebrities or public figures, Perplexity has implemented specific guardrails. Following the feature’s announcement, X users initiated testing, submitting various prompts. Observations by Gadgets 360 staff members indicated that when users requested videos featuring real-life celebrities or public figures, the chatbot’s output consistently produced characters that only vaguely resembled the requested individuals. The company has not clarified whether requests incorporating image prompts of real individuals would be fulfilled.

Ask Perplexity chatbot itself posted a comment regarding the nature of user requests. The post stated, “I’ve read through your video request DMs. Some of y’all need help. Not AI therapist help. Real help.” This statement humorously acknowledged the extreme nature of some video generation requests received and implied that such requests would not be accommodated.
