OpenAI, the company that popularized generative AI, is reportedly shifting its focus toward a new type of device—a compact, screenless AI companion, rather than a wearable. The move follows a $6.5 billion acquisition of io, a startup led by former Apple designer Jony Ive.

According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the new product direction to employees on Wednesday. He described the device as a “third core device,” alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone, designed to be integrated into daily life. The device will be small enough to sit on a desk or fit in a pocket and will be fully aware of its user’s surroundings.

The acquisition of io, founded last year, is central to this new venture. Jony Ive, known for his design work at Apple, will assume a key creative and design role at OpenAI. Altman reportedly believes this new category of device could eventually add $1 trillion in market value to the company.

During his address to employees, Altman stressed the importance of secrecy, aiming to prevent competitors from replicating the product before its launch. A recording of Altman’s remarks, however, leaked to the Journal, prompting questions about internal trust and future disclosures.
