Gemini gets big, but not ChatGPT big

Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, reached 350 million monthly active users globally as of March, according to internal data revealed during the company’s ongoing antitrust lawsuit.

The data, first reported by The Information, also showed that Gemini’s daily active users surged from 9 million in October 2024 to 35 million last month, indicating a significant increase in usage over the past year.

Despite this growth, Gemini still trails behind the industry’s most popular AI tools. Google’s own data presented in court estimated that ChatGPT had around 600 million monthly active users in March, comparable to Meta AI, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg said was nearing 600 million monthly users in December.

The discrepancy in user numbers between Gemini and its competitors can be attributed to various factors, including differences in how companies measure monthly active users (MAUs). Nonetheless, Gemini’s consumer adoption has been substantial, driven by Google’s integrations with Samsung phones, Google Workspace applications, and Chrome, which have put the AI tool in front of millions of users.

Google’s strategy to expand Gemini‘s reach through these integrations has contributed to its growing user base, with the company embedding AI capabilities into its existing products and services.
