Bluesky has launched its blue check verification feature, confirming previous rumors about the platform’s plans to introduce the feature. The blue check is designed to verify the legitimacy of notable accounts, making it easier for users to trust the authenticity of their posts.

Initially, Bluesky is working with a select few “Trusted Verifiers,” independent organizations that can verify their team members’ accounts. For instance, a company can verify its public relations team’s accounts with blue checks, indicating that they are trusted sources of company news. Bluesky’s moderation team verifies each new verification to ensure authenticity.

The platform already had a form of verification, allowing users to link their Bluesky username to a domain they own. This feature has been used by 270,000 accounts, which have linked their username to a website. According to Bluesky, “Domain handles continue to be an important part of verification,” but users have requested a more visible signal to identify authentic accounts.

At launch, Bluesky is not accepting verification applications, but it plans to introduce a request form in the future. The blue check feature aims to reduce disinformation from impersonators, particularly for public figures like celebrities, journalists, and politicians.
