Opera just gave over 100M users a built-in AI assistant for free

Opera Mini’s new AI rollout brings real-time intelligence to mobile-first users in Africa, combining ChatGPT-like power with almost zero data impact.

Opera has rolled out its browser AI, Aria, to Opera Mini, bringing AI-powered features to over 100 million users worldwide, particularly in Africa where high data costs have limited internet access.

Aria integrates into Opera Mini, enabling users to access up-to-date information, generate text and images, summarize content, and learn new skills, all while saving data and without impacting the app’s size. The AI is powered by Opera’s Composer AI engine, which leverages OpenAI and Google AI technologies.

To use Aria, Opera Mini users need to update to the latest version, available on the Google Play Store. They can then access Aria through the main menu or at the bottom of the start page. Opera Mini’s data compression technology and partnerships with local network providers have helped bridge the digital divide in Africa, where mobile data costs are significantly higher than in other regions.

Opera’s Aria AI lets you talk your tabs into order

According to a recent Opera survey, 59% of respondents in Nigeria say data is too expensive, and over half admit they often run out of data before the end of the month. Opera Mini has been downloaded over 1 billion times and has a 4.6-star rating on Google Play.

Opera Mini’s key features include data compression, offline file sharing, and a built-in ad-blocker. The browser has played a crucial role in enabling internet access across Africa for nearly 20 years, thanks to its lightweight design and partnerships with local network providers to facilitate free data offers of 1.5GB monthly.
