Spotify is down worldwide: What we know so far

Downdetector spikes and a terse status post confirm a cross‑platform Spotify disruption starting 08:00 ET. Here’s the scope, the likely cause, and your workarounds.

If Spotify refuses to load this morning you are not alone. A sudden, widespread outage is preventing many users from logging in, playing tracks, or even opening the company’s support pages. Third‑party monitoring services and Spotify’s own status board confirm the disruption, which began shortly after 08:00 ET (12:00 UTC) and quickly triggered a spike in problem reports.

Why is Spotify unavailable right now?

Neither Spotify nor its cloud partners have published a root‑cause analysis, but the company’s support portal acknowledges “the app isn’t loading properly” and that playback stalls for some users on both mobile and desktop. The incident coincides with an abrupt surge on Downdetector, where reports jumped from baseline to more than 17 000 worldwide within minutes.

Which regions and platforms are affected?

User posts show issues in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Downdetector’s live heat map highlights clusters in New York, London, Madrid, and Jakarta. The symptoms appear identical on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and the web player.

When did the outage start and how has it evolved?

First social‑media complaints surfaced around 07:55 ET. By 08:10 ET Downdetector’s graph recorded its peak. In Türkiye the same curve shows 867 reports at 16:03 local time, a thousand‑percent jump over normal hourly traffic. Spotify posted its first public acknowledgement roughly 30 minutes after the spike.

What errors are users seeing?

Typical messages include “Something went wrong” splash screens, endless loading spinners, or tracks freezing at 0:00. Some listeners report 502 gateway errors on the web interface.

What has Spotify officially said?

The company’s status message reads: “We’re seeing reports from users that the app isn’t loading properly or that they’re experiencing playback issues. Others report that they’re having issues accessing the Support site. This seems to happen both on mobile and desktop devices.” Spotify engineers say they are “looking into it” and will post updates on @SpotifyStatus.

Can I do anything to fix the problem on my end?

  • Quit and relaunch the Spotify app.
  • Toggle Wi‑Fi or switch to mobile data to rule out local network issues.
  • Clear the app cache or reinstall the client (note: downloads will need to be re‑saved).
  • If you have Premium, enable Offline Mode to play already downloaded tracks.

These steps will not solve a server‑side failure, but they help confirm whether the issue is local or global.

Are there temporary alternatives?

You can still play locally stored audio files through Spotify’s “Local Files” option or switch to another streaming service until the outage clears. Podcast listeners may import RSS feeds into standalone podcast players that support manual URLs.

Has Spotify experienced similar incidents before?

Yes. In January 2024 an expired authentication token knocked the service offline for roughly 45 minutes, and a March 2023 content‑delivery‑network misconfiguration caused a 70‑minute interruption. Both were resolved without permanent data loss.

Will Premium subscribers receive compensation?

Spotify’s Terms of Service allow for prorated credits only if “material interruptions” persist for an “unreasonable” duration. Historically, short outages have not triggered automatic refunds, but users can open a billing ticket through Spotify Support if they feel significantly affected.

Where can I track live updates?

For the fastest information check:

  • @SpotifyStatus for engineering updates.
  • @SpotifyCares for customer‑service replies.
  • Downdetector’s Spotify page for real‑time report graphs.

What should I do once the outage is resolved?

Log out and back in to refresh your session, check for any pending app updates, and clear cached data if the interface feels sluggish. After that, verify that downloads and playlists sync correctly before resuming normal use.

We will update this story as Spotify releases additional details.
