ChatGPT’s image generator, known for its Studio Ghibli-esque recreations, is now available to all users, including those on the free tier, after a brief delay due to high demand, OpenAI announced.

CEO Sam Altman stated on X that the image generation update has been rolled out to all free users, adding that usage is limited, though ChatGPT itself does not specify the precise limits.

Altman had previously indicated a limit of three image generations per day for free users. This was consistent with initial usage before payment was required.

The updated image generation, powered by the GPT-4o model, initially launched on March 25th and was intended for all ChatGPT subscription tiers: Plus, Pro, Team, and Free.

The free rollout experienced a one-day delay after launch due to high demand, with Altman quipping that “our GPUs are melting.” ChatGPT gained one million new users in a single hour at one point.

OpenAI recently concluded a $40 billion funding round, the largest for a private tech company, valuing the company at $300 billion.
