The updated keyboard enhances navigation with an Xbox controller by introducing helpful shortcuts. For instance, the X button functions as backspace, the Y button serves as the spacebar, and the menu button acts as enter. Microsoft has also aligned the keyboard keys vertically for smoother navigation.
The new gamepad keyboard layout was initially beta tested in September and is now available in the Release Preview version of Windows 11, specifically in build 24H2 Build 26100.3613. This change allows Xbox controller users to navigate and type more effectively using the on-screen keyboard.

Microsoft stated, “We have enabled the Gamepad keyboard layout for the touch keyboard in Windows 11.” This update specifically addresses the needs of handheld devices, offering a controller-friendly alternative to input without requiring users to switch to tablet mode for text entry.
In addition to the gamepad keyboard, Microsoft continues to enhance the handheld Windows gaming experience. The company is reportedly working on a handheld Xbox device slated for release later this year in collaboration with an OEM, thereby intensifying its competition in the handheld gaming market.
Moreover, the latest updates also include a compact mode for the Game Bar, making it more suitable for smaller screens, and improvements to the main Xbox app for PC that simplify controller navigation. The gamepad keyboard layout and other enhancements are expected to be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks and to those opting into non-security updates within days.
