Apple is set to upgrade the selfie cameras across its iPhone 17 series to a 24MP sensor, according to analyst Jeff Pu (via 9to5Mac). This marks a significant enhancement from the current 12MP front-facing camera featured in the iPhone 16 lineup.

Apple’s iPhone 17 series: 24MP selfie camera confirmed for September launch

The iPhone 16 models have utilized a 12MP front camera for several generations, with only minor adjustments, such as larger apertures. Pu’s report aligns with earlier predictions by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who noted that at least one iPhone 17 model would include a 24MP selfie camera.

The increase in megapixels is notable, but factors like lens aperture, sensor size, and software also greatly influence overall image quality. However, from a marketing perspective, a 24MP camera appears more modern and appealing compared to the 12MP of previous models.

New features in iPhone 17 lineup

In addition to the upgraded selfie camera, Pu indicated the iPhone 17 models will feature increased RAM, rising from 8GB in the iPhone 16 series to 12GB in the iPhone 17 series. This enhancement is speculated to support future AI features that may require more memory.

The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September 2025, with Apple introducing the base iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. A new model, the iPhone 17 Air, will replace the iPhone 17 Plus and will feature a slimmer design, possibly reflecting Apple’s experimentation with powerful yet compact devices.

In a recent research note with investment firm GF Securities, Pu reiterated that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will all be equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera. Kuo also supported these claims, stating that the upgrade would “significantly improve the image quality.” The higher resolution enables users to maintain photo quality even when cropped, offering greater flexibility in post-processing.

Pu’s report also included other expectations for the iPhone 17 series, such as a 48-megapixel telephoto camera for the Pro models and the introduction of the A19 and A19 Pro chips, which are anticipated to use TSMC’s newer third-generation 3nm process known as N3P.

All four iPhone 17 models are expected to launch in September 2025.
