Apple has released the latest iOS 18.4 beta, which adds support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) on Google Fi, fulfilling a long-awaited improvement for iPhone users since September.
Apple quietly adds RCS for Google Fi
With iOS 18.4 beta 2, Google Fi subscribers can find the RCS Messaging toggle in Settings > Apps > Messages. The activation process may take some time to complete. Additionally, iOS 18.4 appears to expand RCS support to other MVNOs using T-Mobile’s network in the United States.
iOS 18 to finally support Rich Communication Services (RCS)
When iOS 18 was launched in September, RCS was limited to major U.S. carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, with support for other providers introduced in subsequent releases. Apple maintains a support article titled “Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in the United States and Canada,” which includes information on the status of RCS messaging.
iOS 18.4 is expected to be stable by April, following several more beta releases that will feature notable changes. Users can join the beta program now to access RCS. RCS has been operational for some time, gaining traction primarily after Google advocated for its support on Apple devices. With iOS 18 released last year, RCS has become available for better communication between Android and Apple platforms.

However, for RCS to function properly, wireless carriers must provide their support. Despite many brands adopting RCS, Google Fi customers have faced delays in its implementation on iPhones. Fortunately, reports indicate that RCS is now enabled in the iOS 18.4 beta. It is crucial to note that users who are not part of the beta program will need to wait several months for iOS 18.4’s official release.
SMS messaging has historically posed challenges for both Android and iPhone users. While previously adequate, it has become less effective compared to messaging apps that offer advanced features. RCS delivers enhanced security and opens new avenues for communication. Google is expected to continue improving RCS functionality as it advocates for the standard’s adoption.
For users interested in experiencing RCS, downloading Google Messages and enabling it is recommended.
