What does very demure very mindful TikTok trend mean?

The word “demure,” according to Merriam-Webster, refers to someone who is “affectedly modest, reserved, or serious.” In some contexts, it can also mean “coy”.

In the context of this very demure very mindful TikTok trend, “demure” is used to describe a hyper-feminine and reserved demeanor.

Lebron’s original video, where she detailed her beauty routine—complete with makeup, a long straight wig, and perfume—exemplified this concept in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

Lebron’s emphasis on very demure very mindful TikTok trend resonated with TikTok users, leading to a viral spread of the trend. A follow-up video where she repeated the phrase “very demure, very mindful” and mentioned being “modest” amassed 7.6 million views, solidifying the trend’s popularity.

The phrase quickly became a buzzword on the platform, with users parodying the concept in various everyday situations.

What is Demuremaxxing?

As the very demure very mindful TikTok trend expanded, it gave rise to new terms like “demuremaxxing”.

This term, following the popular “maxxing” suffix on TikTok, refers to taking the demure aesthetic to an extreme level.

Users began creating content that exaggerated the concept of being demure in increasingly absurd scenarios, adding a layer of satire to the trend. The less sense it made to be demure in a given situation, the funnier the content became.

Everyone on the Demuremaxxing train!

The very demure very mindful TikTok trend caught the attention of high-profile TikTok users, including RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen.

Bob’s video, where he lip-synced to the sound from Lebron’s post while applying makeup, garnered over 1.2 million views in just one day. This further propelled the trend, encouraging more users to create their own versions.

Another offshoot of the trend was “demuretsey,” a combination of “demure” and “cutesy.” This term described a state of modesty that also incorporated a playful, cute element. On August 10, 2024, Lebron released a video explaining the concept of “demuretsey,” which quickly attracted 1.8 million views, proving that the trend had staying power.

Is demure good or bad?

The concept of “demure” isn’t inherently good or bad; it depends on the context and how it’s perceived or used.

  • Positive connotation: In some contexts, being demure can be seen as a positive trait, especially if it reflects a person’s natural modesty, thoughtfulness, or a preference for being reserved. It can be associated with elegance, grace, and humility.
  • Negative connotation: On the other hand, being demure can sometimes be viewed negatively if it is seen as overly submissive, repressive, or conforming to outdated gender roles. In some cases, it may imply that someone is not expressing their true self or is being forced into a certain behavior.

In the context of the TikTok trend we discussed, the idea of being “demure” is used satirically, poking fun at the expectation that people, particularly women, should be overly modest or reserved. It reflects how societal expectations of demureness can sometimes be exaggerated to the point of absurdity.

A satirical take on modesty after all

The “Very Demure, Very Mindful” TikTok trend serves as a satirical commentary on traditional notions of modesty and femininity. It reflects TikTok’s ability to take niche cultural concepts and amplify them into widespread phenomena, all while adding a humorous twist.

Through this trend, TikTokers are not just engaging with the idea of being demure but are also poking fun at the absurdity of adhering too strictly to such outdated ideals.
