The Tesla Megapack. That’s the official name of France’s energy storage future. The groundbreaking development adds a huge cornerstone for the country’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Harmony Energy recently announced the commencement of construction on the Cheviré 100 MW/200 MWh Tesla Megapack battery project in Nantes Saint-Nazaire Harbour, France.

The impressive installation will utilize Tesla’s 2-hour Megapacks, capable of providing enough electricity to power more than 170,000 homes for two hours.

Tesla Megapack opens a new chapter for an old power site

The Cheviré site, once home to a coal, gas, and oil power station operational from 1954 to 1986, is now being transformed into a beacon of green energy. The transition symbolizes the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, with the Tesla Megapack playing a crucial role in this evolution.

Clément Girard, Harmony Energy COO for France, highlighted the significance of this location:

“It’s an exciting location given the historical importance of the fossil-fuel coal power station, but looking ahead, the delivery of the Cheviré BESS will transform the site into exactly the opposite, facilitating the green electrification of the French energy system, whilst offsetting several hundred thousand tons of CO2”.

The Tesla Megapack is rapidly becoming the go-to solution for large-scale energy storage worldwide. Its popularity is evident in Tesla’s record-breaking deployment of 9.4 GWh of energy storage last quarter, more than doubling previous records.

The Megapack’s success extends beyond France. In California, Tesla is involved in another BESS project featuring 200 MW/800 MWh of Megapacks, built on the site of a former steam plant. This trend of repurposing old energy sites for new, clean energy storage solutions is becoming increasingly common.

Tesla is expanding its production and partnerships

To meet the growing demand for Tesla Megapacks, the company is ramping up production at its “Megafactory” in Lathrop, California. The company has also begun construction on a Megafactory in Shanghai, China, with each facility aiming to produce approximately 10,000 Megapacks annually upon reaching volume production.

Energy management in manufacturing: Trends, innovations and modern solutions

Tesla’s commitment to expanding its energy storage business is further exemplified by its recent contract with Intersect Power.

This massive 15.3 GWh agreement represents a massive expansion of their current partnership, which previously stood at just 2.4 GWh. The updated commitment includes 966 MWh projects across three different sites in Texas, all expected to go from concept to commissioned in just one year.

Grid management is the key

One of the key features of the Tesla Megapack is its integration with Tesla’s Autobidder system. This real-time trading platform is designed to maximize operator revenue over time, adding an extra layer of efficiency to the energy storage solution.

The Autobidder system allows for intelligent energy management, enabling operators to optimize the use of stored energy based on grid demand and energy prices. This smart approach to energy distribution contributes to more stable grids and potentially lower energy costs for consumers.

Not just for France, but a global energy storage solution

While the Cheviré project in France is making headlines, it’s just one example of the Tesla Megapack’s global impact. From California to China, these large-scale battery systems are transforming how we store and distribute energy.
As Andy Symonds, Harmony Energy CEO for the French market, stated,

“Developing and operating vital battery energy storage facilities across France, will lead to enhanced energy security, more affordable energy bills, and the decarbonisation of the grid”.

The Tesla Megapack is not just a product; it’s a key player in the global transition to sustainable energy. As more countries and companies adopt this technology, we can expect to see huge changes in how we produce, store, and consume electricity.
