It seems Tesla Cybertruck recalls are becoming quite the “routine affair” in 2024, aren’t they?
Tesla has announced a recall affecting more than 11,000 Cybertruck vehicles due to a problem with their windshield wipers. This recall pertains to all 2024 model Cybertrucks produced between November 13, 2023, and June 6, 2024. Since deliveries of the Cybertruck commenced in November 2023, this essentially includes nearly every vehicle delivered to date.
What’s the reason behind all these Tesla Cybertruck recalls?
But why is Tesla recalling these vehicles? Let’s take a closer look at the description of the defect.
“On affected vehicles, the front windshield wiper motor controller may stop functioning due to electrical overstress to the gate driver component. A non-functioning windshield wiper may reduce visibility in certain operating conditions, which may increase the risk of a collision,” the recall report reads.
“The Cybertruck is equipped with a cosmetic applique along the exterior of the trunk bed trim, known as the sail applique, which is affixed to the vehicle with adhesive. On affected vehicles, the sail applique or adhesion may not have been installed according to specification, which may cause the sail applique to become loose or separate from the vehicle,” another recall report published states.
The report also mentioned that Tesla is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities connected to this issue. For Cybertruck owners, this recall means they will need to visit a Tesla service center to have the windshield wiper motor replaced.
Recurring: The Cybertruck windshield wiper issue
The Cybertruck’s enormous windshield has been a topic of discussion even before the vehicle’s official debut, with early spy photos showing its unusually large size compared to other vehicles. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has openly discussed the difficulties this wiper posed during development, noting the lack of a straightforward solution.
After the Cybertruck launched, conversations about the wiper issue quieted down, but it appears the problem remains unresolved. Alongside the windshield wiper recall, Tesla has issued another recall for the Cybertruck, this time for a trim piece on the truck bed that can loosen and fall off. Owners will need to have this part replaced or securely re-attached to prevent it from detaching.
This isn’t Tesla’s first experience with significant recalls. In 2023, the company recalled two million vehicles due to safety concerns with its Autopilot feature, following an extensive investigation into approximately 1,000 crashes involving the technology.
How much is the Tesla Cybertruck?
The base model, estimated at $60,990, features a rear-wheel drive system and is expected to be available in 2025. This version offers an estimated range of 250 miles and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 6.5 seconds.
For those seeking more power and capability, the all-wheel drive version is priced at an estimated $79,990 and will also be available in 2025. This model boasts a 340-mile estimated range, a top speed of 112 mph, and can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. It features 600 horsepower, 7,435 lb-ft of torque, and an impressive towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.
At the top end, the Cyberbeast model, with an estimated price of $99,990, is designed for maximum performance and will be delivered in 2025. It offers a range of around 320 miles, a top speed of 130 mph, and a blistering 0 to 60 mph time of 2.6 seconds. This model delivers 845 horsepower and 10,296 lb-ft of torque, with the same substantial towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.
Each of these models is tailored to different user needs, ensuring that there is a Cybertruck for a variety of preferences and requirements, according to Tesla.
Perhaps Tesla should trade their video stunts, like “Cybertruck beats Porsche 911 while towing a 911,” for some quality time in the shop fixing those recurring issues…
