Microsoft Build, the annual developer conference hosted by the tech giant, is upon us once again. From May 21st to 23rd, developers and tech enthusiasts will gather (both physically in Seattle and virtually) to witness the latest advancements in Microsoft’s software and hardware ecosystems.
This year’s Build promises a deep dive into the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI) and its integration into various Microsoft products.
A legacy of innovation
Microsoft Build has a long and storied history, dating back to 2009. Initially focused on Windows development tools, the conference has broadened its scope over the years, encompassing the entire Microsoft developer ecosystem.
Past conferences have seen the unveiling of major advancements like the Windows Phone platform, the HoloLens augmented reality headset, and the cross-platform development framework .NET MAUI. Build serves as a platform for Microsoft to connect with developers, showcase its latest technologies, and gather valuable feedback to shape the future of its products.
What to expect at Microsoft Build 2024?
Surface refresh with a focus on AI
While a minor Surface update occurred earlier this year, primarily aimed at enterprise customers, Microsoft Build 2024 is expected to unveil a refresh targeted at consumers. Rumors suggest new Surface Laptop 6 models in 13- and 15-inch variations boasting thinner bezels, larger trackpads, and a wider selection of ports. The most intriguing addition could be the inclusion of Qualcomm’s Arm-based Snapdragon X Elite chip, promising significant performance improvements.
There’s also a possibility of an Arm-based Surface Pro 10 mirroring the design of the business model released in March, but with upgraded accessories like a Copilot-enabled Type Cover. According to reports, Microsoft is confident these new devices can outperform Apple’s M3-powered MacBook Air in terms of raw speed and AI performance.
AI Explorer marks a new era for Windows
Beyond hardware, a significant upgrade expected is improved on-device AI and machine learning capabilities thanks to the Snapdragon X Elite chip. This chip boasts a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of delivering up to 45 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), a threshold Microsoft previously stated as essential for running Windows AI features locally.
This paves the way for exciting additions in the next major Windows update, including “AI Explorer”.
This umbrella term encompasses various machine learning-powered features, potentially including a revamped search tool with natural language input capabilities and a new timeline for navigating past activities on your computer.
Contextual suggestions based on your current actions are also rumored to be part of the package. Building upon existing Copilot features, Microsoft might introduce live captions, expanded Studio effects (including real-time filters), and local generative AI tools for on-the-spot photo creation and more.
Smarter Copilot is on its way with offline capabilities
Microsoft’s vision seems to involve integrating AI Copilot across its entire ecosystem. From its initial launch as Github Copilot in 2021 to its current iterations like Bing Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot for productivity applications, the company is pushing for ubiquitous AI assistance. However, a current limitation is the reliance on an internet connection for most Copilot functionalities.
This might change soon, with Intel confirming Microsoft’s efforts to make Copilot work locally. This could enable faster processing of simpler tasks like basic math or file-related queries without needing internet access.
Following hardware and software announcements, Build serves as a platform for developers to delve deeper and create applications that leverage the new AI features and expanded Copilot functionalities. Microsoft has already hinted at possibilities like Copilot on Edge and Copilot Plugins for 365 apps, with more details likely to emerge during the conference.
The scheduled sessions heavily emphasize AI, with workshops on customizing Microsoft Copilot, integrating Copilot into Teams, and developing Copilot extensions.
