The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has set its sights on recent maneuvers by tech giants Microsoft and Amazon in the AI arena.

The regulatory body announced its intention to investigate specific partnerships and acquisitions undertaken by these companies, citing concerns over the potential stifling of competition within the burgeoning AI industry.

This move by the CMA comes amidst a backdrop of intensifying scrutiny of Big Tech companies and their growing influence across various sectors. The regulator’s focus on AI partnerships reflects a growing awareness of the strategic importance this technology holds for the future.

Microsoft under the microscope

The CMA’s investigation into Microsoft centers on two key developments.

Firstly, the regulator will examine Microsoft’s partnership with Mistral AI, a French startup specializing in large language models, a powerful type of AI capable of generating human-quality text and code. The details of this partnership remain undisclosed, but the CMA is likely interested in understanding the potential implications for competition in the large language model market.

Secondly, the CMA will delve into Microsoft’s hiring of a team of AI researchers from another startup, Inflection AI. This move could potentially grant Microsoft access to cutting-edge AI research and development, further solidifying its position in the industry.

The CMA will assess whether such acquisitions stifle innovation by consolidating expertise within a single company.

Amazon’s Anthropic investment in CMA’s crosshairs

In addition to Microsoft, the CMA has also turned its attention towards Amazon’s recent investment in Anthropic, a San Francisco-based AI research company. In 2024, Amazon committed a significant sum of $4 billion to Anthropic, a move that raised eyebrows within the industry. The CMA will investigate the nature of this investment and its potential impact on competition.

One key area of focus could be the access Amazon might gain to Anthropic’s research findings and technological advancements. If Amazon gains exclusive rights to certain AI developments through this investment, it could create an uneven playing field for other companies in the sector.

Big Tech is planting the seeds of tomorrow

CMA’s investigation is not an isolated incident. In recent years, competition regulators around the world have become increasingly vigilant regarding the dominance of Big Tech companies. This heightened scrutiny has manifested in investigations into various aspects of Big Tech’s operations, including data privacy practices, potential anti-competitive mergers and acquisitions, and the algorithmic decision-making processes employed by these companies.

The CMA’s focus on AI partnerships represents an extension of this trend. As AI continues to evolve and permeate various industries, regulators are keen to ensure that competition remains healthy and fosters innovation within the sector.

The ultimate outcome of the CMA’s investigation remains to be seen.

However, one thing is certain: The decisions made will have a significant impact on the future trajectory of the AI industry, shaping the landscape for both established tech giants and aspiring startups alike.
