Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, but one concern for many drivers is finding charging stations on the go.
Google Maps is taking a step forward to address this challenge by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the electric car owner’s experience.
Google explains the framework of this new update to their popular app with the following words in a blog post:
“Electric vehicle ownership is on the rise, which means more people are looking for ways to charge their car — whether they’re on the go or planning their drive,”
Google Maps is going to have a direct instruction formula for EV owners
Imagine this: you pull up to a charging station only to discover it’s tucked away in a confusing maze of a parking garage. Google Maps is using AI to help you avoid this frustration. By analyzing user reviews, the AI generates summaries that provide clear and concise directions to the charging station.
For instance, if a station is located on a specific floor of a parking garage, the AI might provide instructions like “Enter the parking garage on level P2 and follow signs for electric vehicle charging. Turn right just before exiting.” This extra layer of detail ensures you don’t waste precious time wandering around looking for a charge.
Real-time information
Google Maps is also adding real-time details about charging stations to its app. This includes information on whether ports are available or in use. No more arriving at a station only to find all the chargers occupied!
Additionally, the in-car map display for compatible vehicles will showcase nearby charging stations along with their charging speeds. This allows you to prioritize stations that can get you back on the road quickly, especially during long trips.
Smart stop suggestions for multi-stop trips
Planning a road trip with multiple stops?
Google Maps factors in your EV’s battery level and suggests optimal charging stops along the way. This eliminates the guesswork and ensures you reach your destinations without running out of power. The system even adjusts your projected arrival time to account for charging stops, keeping your trip on schedule.
Google’s commitment to improving the EV experience extends beyond current features. As technology advances and EV infrastructure expands, Google Maps is designed to adapt. The system’s reliance on user reviews allows it to continuously learn and incorporate new information about charging stations. This ensures that Google Maps remains a valuable resource for EV drivers as the electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve.
