Meta Quest 3‘s passthrough mode is a groundbreaking feature that seamlessly integrates the virtual and real worlds for an immersive mixed-reality experience. With this technology, users can perceive their physical surroundings while wearing the VR headset, thanks to the cameras embedded in the Meta Quest 3.

Meta’s much-hyped VR is now being tested by users, providing a visual feast for those on social media who haven’t had the opportunity to try the technology first-hand.

So what makes this goggle so special compared to its predecessor, Meta Quest 2? Let’s take a look at users’ experiences.

What is Meta Quest 3’s Passthrough mode?

Meta Quest 3’s passthrough mode is an innovative feature that enables users to see their real-world surroundings while wearing the VR headset. This advanced technology provides a view of the physical environment through the headset’s cameras, blending the digital and physical worlds to create a seamless mixed-reality experience.

The passthrough mode captures the real world around the user using cameras on the Meta Quest 3. This view is then displayed within the VR environment, allowing users to effortlessly interact with their surroundings. The enhanced visibility offered by this feature ensures that users can navigate their physical space safely and conveniently without removing their headsets.

In addition to improving immersion, the passthrough mode prioritizes safety and convenience. It allows users to quickly check their physical surroundings, avoiding potential obstacles or people while they are fully immersed in VR. This feature guarantees that users can move around freely, enjoying an uninterrupted experience without worrying about collisions or accidents.

According to reports and the real-world examples we see all around social media, Meta Quest 3’s passthrough mode boasts improved resolution and vibrant full-color representation of the real world compared to previous versions of the headset.

The promised VR experience is finally here

When we talk about Meta Quest 3’s goal of taking VR technology to the next level, who could have imagined that the real and the virtual world could merge in such harmony?

On social media, we started to see videos where many people who took Quest 3 in their hands can comfortably do their daily activities without taking off their VR even in the most crowded places in the city.

We’re mesmerized by technology as we watch video after video of examples. The idea of being consciously present in two universes at the same time, sounds familiar from a Sci-Fi movie is it, is now a reality.

Grab a cup of coffee

An example of the Meta Quest 3 passthrough mode comes from TikTok user Carrot Survivor.

The user builds a physical bridge between the virtual and real worlds by holding the video he watches without taking off his Meta Quest and taking it to the balcony of his house with his coffee. While controlling the YouTube video with his left hand, he sips his coffee with the view thanks to Meta Quest 3 Passtrough in his right hand.

A not-really virtual tour

Another fascinating example comes from Threads user jaymayo_vrtist.

The user, who spent the entire experience at the Javits Center in VR during yesterday’s NYCC event, did not miss a single second of the show thanks to Meta Quest 3’s Passthrough and was able to easily switch between the virtual world and the real world whenever he needed.

See his adventure in Javits Center below.

Here is how to turn on Passthrough and set up the Double Tap for Passthrough shortcut on your Oculus Quest:

  1. Put on your Oculus Quest headset and navigate to the universal menu
  2. Hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu until Quick Settings appears
  3. Select the Quick Settings panel to open it
  4. From the Quick Settings panel, select the “Settings” option at the top right
  5. In the Settings menu, select “Guardian”
  6. Locate the toggle switch labeled “Double Tap for Passthrough” and slide it to the right to turn it on

Once the Double Tap for Passthrough shortcut is enabled, you can quickly enter Passthrough mode by tapping either the left or right side of your headset twice and experience the VR without disconnecting from the real world!
