In a groundbreaking event, Sony unveiled Project Q, a highlight of their PlayStation Portable 2023 showcase. This innovative device, designed to revolutionize the handheld gaming sphere, was introduced amidst a wave of anticipation and excitement, promising to raise the bar in the gaming industry and solidify Sony’s reputation as a trailblazer in the realm of entertainment technology.

Project Q was hinted at PlayStation Portable 2023

Sony’s latest handheld gaming gadget, named Project Q, intended to complement the PlayStation 5. This device, while still shrouded in mystery, has managed to capture significant attention. As of July 2023, we caught our first real-world glimpse of someone operating the device, adding fuel to the already growing excitement.

What is Project Q?

So, what exactly is Project Q? It is a handheld gaming unit under development by Sony, via its PlayStation wing. Unlike fully-fledged devices equipped with robust specs to support high-demand games (such as the ROG Ally or Steam Deck), the design philosophy behind Project Q is different. The gadget is primarily aimed at playing games over Wi-Fi, leveraging the power of your PlayStation for game streaming.

Sony first unveiled this intriguing device during a PlayStation showcase live stream in May 2023.

“Later this year, we will launch a dedicated device that will enable you to stream any game from your PS5 console, using Remote Play, over Wi-Fi,” was the announcement made during the reveal.

It’s important to note that in order for games to be accessible on the PlayStation Portable 2023 device, Project Q, they need to be installed on your PS5 console. This, however, does not extend to VR games. The gaming experience is driven via Wi-Fi streaming, hence having a robust router is an essential requirement.

Project Q leaks

On the 22nd of July, 2023, the world got an unplanned sneak peek of Project Q thanks to a Twitter leak. The user @Zuby_Tech shared several glimpses of the PlayStation Portable 2023 device, including snippets of the gadget effortlessly navigating through menus.

The leaked visuals presented the device as operating on what seemed to be an Android operating system. Now, whether this implies that the final product will sport an Android interface, or perhaps an OS mirroring that of the PlayStation 5, we’ll have to play the waiting game.

It’s worth noting, though, that it’s highly improbable that the final operating system will bear any resemblance to this. What we’re seeing is clearly a developmental environment, which the creators are utilizing for the design of the device. Therefore, it’s wise not to view this leak as the finalized representation of the device.

How good is Project Q?

While we can’t share specifics on performance specs and benchmarks as of now, one aspect of the PlayStation Portable 2023 device is certain – it flaunts an 8-inch 1080p (HD) screen, clocking in at a smooth 60Hz, as disclosed in the May unveiling.

Remember, the crux of Project Q is its streaming capabilities. This is not a device built to run PlayStation’s extraordinary catalog of games like a compact console. Instead, its primary role is to stream games from your PlayStation 5, allowing you to play them on Project Q. With this in mind, don’t hold your breath for any revolutionary specs once they are eventually announced.

Taking a leaf out of the PlayStation 5’s book, Project Q adopts a controller-style layout inspired by the Dual Sense controller that accompanies the PlayStation 5. The control scheme mirrors that of the Dual Sense controller, with the exception of the center touch bar typically found on the original controller.

Can you use Project Q outside?

You may be wondering if Project Q can be utilized outside your home. As it currently stands, Project Q is promoted as an in-home streaming device, suggesting that its functionality might be compromised in public spaces or away from your house. As for whether Sony might introduce a cloud-enabled device for on-the-go gaming, we’ll have to remain patient. Apologies to Vita and PSP enthusiasts.

Project Q release date

As for the release date of device, Sony has indicated a 2023 launch. However, whether this release window will encompass Australia is yet to be confirmed. With Valve still holding back the Steam Deck’s Australian debut, it remains to be seen if Sony will follow a similar rollout strategy for its new handheld device.
