Ai-Da robot spoke to the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee. Before the speech, Ai-Da was known as the first ultra-realistic humanoid AI robot artist. So how did the robot artist get to the House of Lords? Politicians are frequently accused of responding to questions robotically, but recent events in the UK may have revealed how it’s actually done. Continue reading to learn more about the rise of AI-powered robots.
We have already explained some of the best AI-art tools like Stable Diffusion along with DALL-E 2, Midjourney, DreamBooth AI, Wombo Dream, NightCafe AI, Make-A-Video, Chai App, AI Dungeon, and NovelAI. But what AI-art robots? Don’t be scared of AI jargon; we have created a detailed AI glossary for the most commonly used artificial intelligence terms and explain the basics of artificial intelligence as well as the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence. Is artificial intelligence better than human intelligence? Let’s ask the House of Lords.
Ai-Da House of Lords attendance
Ai-Da the robot participated in a discussion about how technology is influencing—and maybe constricting—the art world before the Communications and Digital Committee of Britain as part of an inquiry into the future of the creative industries.
Ai-Da robot was questioned by House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee members about the connection between artificial intelligence, robots, and the arts. A robot testified in the upper chamber of the British Parliament, where unelected baronesses and lords generally congregate to discuss legislative initiatives for the first time in the country’s history.
Ai-Da, a robot with a humanoid face and robotic limbs with a sleek black bob and bangs, a bright orange shirt, denim overalls, and robotic arms, responded to inquiries from the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee on Tuesday. The discussion’s focus was on technology’s place in art.
“I am, and depend on, computer programs and algorithms. Although not alive, I can still create art.”

Although Ai-Da acknowledged she had no idea where things were going, she told the committee that creativity faces “both a threat and an opportunity” from technology.
“My talk at the House of Lords will aim to encourage discussion about creativity. I will show how artificial intelligence and robotics can be used to create artworks that are expressive and visually compelling. I believe that machine creativity presents a great opportunity for us to explore new ideas and ways of thinking.

A question from Baroness Lynne Featherstone, a peer from the Liberal Democrats party, caused the robot to become mute and look blankly at the ground. The audience members laughed that they were afraid but appeared curious anyway. After the technical issue, Ai-Da was reset and back online.
Ai-Da created a painting of the late monarch called “Algorithm Queen” to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee earlier this year. Critics criticized the artwork for lacking passion, but her owner lauded it as the first portrait of the queen ever produced by a robot.
Ai-Da’s creators want the robot to start conversations about robotics and artificial intelligence in the future. However, let’s stop talking politics, take a closer look at Ai-Da’s artistic features, and get to know “her” better.
What is Ai-Da robot?
The first ultra-realistic humanoid robot artist in the world is Ai-Da. Ai-Da is a 2019-completed artificial intelligence robot that creates sculptures, paintings, and sketches. She bears Ada Lovelace’s name. When the robot used her prosthetic hand and cameras in her eyes to draw humans from sight using a pencil, it attracted attention from all over the world.
Aidan Meller, an expert in modern and contemporary art, and a group of scientists from Oxford University built the robot in 2019.
Since Ai-Da Robot debuted in 2019, she has exhibited at ANNKA KULTYS GALLERY, London, UK (2021); The Design Museum, London, UK (2021); KNIG GALERIE, Berlin, Germany (curated by Anika Meier and Johann König) (2021); ANNKA KULTYS GALLERY, London, UK (2020); Barbican Gallery, London, UK (2019); Tate Exchange, London, UK (2019); Ars Electronica (2019). It is quite a career, right? But it is not all; check Ai-Da’s full CV by clicking this link. Ai-Da exhibitions are so popular these days.

Ai-Da robot self-portrait
Ai-Da robot self-portrait is one of the most liked paintings of the “her.”
Ai-Da poetry
Ai-Da also loves writing poems! Ai-Da is not the first AI to have been trained to compose poetry, but according to the creators, it is “the first time an AI robot has written and performed poetry, like a human poet would do.”
“A needle and thread would be necessary
For the completion of the picture.
To view the poor creatures, who were in misery,
That of a hawk, eyes sewn shut.”

Who invented the Ai-Da robot?
Who owns Ai-Da? Aidan Meller, a gallerist, and Engineered Arts, a Cornish robotics business, created Ai-Da. Salaheldin Al Abd and Ziad Abass created her drawing arm, two undergraduate students from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Leeds. In contrast, computer AI experts created her drawing intelligence at the University of Oxford. Ai-Da debuted her new painting arm, which allowed her to use a palette, at the British Library in London in April 2022.
“Creativity is changing. After making history with her self-portraits, self-portraits with no “self”, Ai-Da is continually developing her skills. It’s an exciting time as her painting ability is progressing, and there’s a lot of innovation. How does a non-human robot see the world, how do Ai-Da’s unique algorithms interrogate what she sees? She is in new artistic territory. Who is Ai-Da? She is challenging what it means to be an artist in a post-human world. She questions the foundations of the art world. AI is affecting us all.”
Aidan Meller, director of the Ai-Da Robot project
How does Ai-Da make art?
How Ai-Da works? Ai-Da interprets what is in front of her using computer vision algorithms and the cameras in her eyes. In response to this data, a unique control system activates her robotic arms, enabling her to paint.
Is Ai-Da an AI?
Ai-Da is computer software that depends on artificial intelligence (A.I. ), and it is named after the British mathematician Ada Lovelace, who is regarded as the first computer programmer.
Are robots artificial intelligence?
What is robotic art?
Any art that uses robotic or automated technology is considered robotic art. One of the numerous subfields of robotic art is robotic installation art, which uses computers, sensors, and actuators to be programmed to respond to audience interactions. As a result, unlike other forms of kinetic art, the future behavior of such installations can be changed by input from either the artist or the participant.
