Data Natives is just around the corner now, and so is the end of this series of Reasons Why You Should Attend Data Natives. If you are just joining, go ahead and take a look at the previous three posts: Building A Strong Professional Network, The Schedule, and Recruiting. This time around, the focus lies on the Workshops, day 1 of the conference.
One of the ways in which we thought of expanding Data Natives, was through offering practical insights into the exciting subjects that our conference is dealing with. The idea of offering Workshops came up, so we decided to dedicate the first day of the conference to them. Now, we have three workshops divided into two tracks – Tech, and Business – given by truly outstanding professionals.
Tech – Mastering data analysis, manipulation, and machine learning with Python and Mathematica
On Wednesday, October 26, the Workshops day officially starts with Katharine Jarmul’s course Learn Python for Data Analysis. Katharine is an experienced Python developer and technical educator located in Berlin. She has worked on data analysis in Python throughout her career as a developer since 2008. She runs a data analysis consulting and education company here in Berlin, and recently coauthored O’Reilly’s Data Wrangling with Python book teaching new pythonistas how to use data in Python. You can find her recent course offerings and writings at kjamistan.com.
The workshop will cover Python basics as well as an introduction to Python data analysis tools for charting and data wrangling. We will introduce you to how to import, interact, clean and export data using Pandas (a well-known and respected Python library). By the end of this half-day course you will feel comfortable importing and running simple Python analysis on your datasets, large or small.
After the lunch break comes Getting to grips with Mathematica for data manipulation, and machine learning, a 4-hour workshop lead by Dr. Robert Cook, Technical Consultant at Wolfram Europe. Dr. Robert Cook is one of Wolfram Europe’s technical consultants, specializing in projects related to descriptive and predictive analytics. Before joining Wolfram, Robert completed a PhD in condensed matter physics and a Masters degree in Chemistry at the University of Warwick, England, and brings the pragmatic approach of an experimental scientist to his roles within Wolfram.
In this session you will get a hands on start with the Wolfram Language – a multi-discipline symbolic, functional programming language that underpins the power of Wolfram|Alpha, Wolfram System Modeler and Mathematica. Building from the fundamental principles of the language and the powerful pattern-matching engine we will explore various data analysis and machine learning tasks – including the new deep learning Neural Net Framework. Whether you are new to the Wolfram Language or an existing user looking to firm up your grasp of the underlying functional framework – this session will give you the knowledge to start functional development.
Business – Monetizing Data effectively and at scale
For the Business side of things, we have a single, all-day workshop happening at Ahoy!’s Jaffa room: Creating Innovative Data-as-a-Service Products, facilitated by Elizabeth Press, Co-Founder and Principal of D3M Labs. Organizations D3M Labs has worked with include Mondelez, Betahaus, Accelerate Korea, IAV and global players in financial services and GovTech. As an intrapreneur at Dell, Elizabeth built up and managed advanced analytics functions globally. Before Dell, she worked in top-tier strategy consulting and quantitative finance. Elizabeth mentors at the ReDI school of Digital Integration.
This workshop will be a one-day jump-start for your next DaaS product. Through activations and real-world case studies, you will learn step-by-step how different companies monetize their digital & information assets. Simulations and feedback will be used to teach you hands-on how to use Lean Canvas and other tools to formulate and validate your ideas. Professionals and teams from companies, non-profits and governmental organizations are welcome. We ask BI & business consultants not to apply.
Elizabeth wrote a fantastic blog post that delves deeply into what Data-as-a-Service even is, and how you can start creating your own DaaS product. Check it out if you want to get a test of what the workshop will be.
