In Taiwan, the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and Fujitsu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, that will see the two organisations building a cloud-based analytics platform and nurture talent in computational sciences. The MOU was signed by NCKU’s President, Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung and CEO of Futjitsu Taiwan Ikegami Ichirou, on behalf of their respective organisations.

Dr Hwung stated that under the MOU, both parties will establish a platform for cloud computing and big data analysis to help support agriculture and genomics research.

Fujitsu began its development in the fields of cloud computing and data analytics back in May, when they jointly established a R&D journal with the Taiwan University. Under the MOU, NCKU will be bringing their research and engineering specialities in the fields of microbiology and agricultural sciences to the table, whilst Fujitsu will be providing the technologies underpinning the platform in the joint endeavour. NCKU hope that the move will lead to a greater nurturing of computational science talents within their institution, and also expand their role within global agricultural and genomic research.

The partnership will initially focus on skills development at the intersection between data science and academic research. Conferences and workshops will be used to help researchers exchange ideas and fortify their knowledge bases. The ultimate goal is the construction of a big data analytics platform for use in agricultural scientific research, which will be capable of exploring genomics research issues, and sharing R&D results.
