Glassdoor Uses the Power of Data Science to Help The Unemployed Find Jobs

The popular jobs portal and review site, Glassdoor, announced on Tuesday a new tool to help the 9.5 million long-term unemployed Americans look for jobs. The free visualisation search tool – named Job Explorer — will help American’s find the best jobs according to their preferences — city, county and state — and uncover other possible career paths.

Job Explorer uses a mapping tool that allows jobseekers to search for their desired job title and then view places across the US that matches the search. Users can look at states and communities that have positions available, and the tool will present exactly how many jobs there are and the probability that the user will find work based on the number of opportunities there now.

Additionally, based on the analysis of millions of resumes, the data science team at Glassdoor has worked on customized suggestions on alternate jobs and career possibilities for jobseekers. By looking at the career progression of people with similar qualifications and work history, Job Explorer will show users the percentage of how many people have gone on to work each alternate job, along with the national average base salary for each.

The company explained the technology in its press release yesterday: if someone searches for a warehouse worker job, the progression tool suggests other jobs like security officer in which 10 percent of warehouse workers transition to a security officer role and earn an average annual base salary of $28,290.

“We believe Glassdoor will help Americans get back to work by offering successful career models, and better tools and insights into where the best opportunities lie,” said Robert Hohman, Glassdoor CEO and co-founder. “We are focused on closing the gap between those looking for jobs and those with jobs to offer, which can ultimately boost our nation’s economy.”
